Because you’re stuck in the moderation gap, and no one taught you how to get out
You’re not a disaster. You’re not out of control. But something isn’t sitting right anymore.
You’ve probably cut back before. For a month, a few weeks, even longer. Told yourself you’ll only drink at weekends. Spent too long rethinking what “normal” looks like.
And maybe you’ve said this: “I’m not doing anything wrong… but I don’t feel entirely right either.”
You’ve made good choices. You’ve had clear intentions. And you know in yourself you don’t need to take the radical step of total abstinence, you’re stronger than that.
This is the space in between. You’re not a rock-bottom story. You’re not totally carefree. You’re just stuck.
That’s where moderation coaching comes in, not as a lifeline, but as a framework.
Four typical types of Inbetweener Drinkers™ (and why coaching works where willpower fails)
1. The Rulemaker who keeps moving the goalposts
“Only at weekends.”
“Two drinks max.”
“Unless it’s someone’s birthday, or I’ve had a hard day, or I’m socialising…”
You make rules to stay in control. Then rationalise your way around them. Again.
You wake up with disappointment, not disaster. But it’s enough to chip away at your confidence.
Why coaching helps:
We don’t hand you more rules. We help you build flexible rituals that hold up when life gets messy. Instead of feeling like you’ve failed by Wednesday, you’ll learn how to make choices that bend without breaking.
2. The Midnight Analyst
On the surface, everything’s fine. You hold it together at work, with family, in public. But at night:
“Did I talk too much?”
“Why did I open a second bottle?”
“I’ll go for a run tomorrow and make up for it…”
You count units. Replay conversations. Make bargains with your future self. But nothing really changes.
Why coaching helps:
You don’t need more guilt. You need strategies in place before the wobble. We teach you how to plan transitions, reduce decision fatigue, and make it easier to follow through on the intentions you already have.
3. The On-again, Off-again Moderator
Dry January? Easy. Back to old habits in February? Also easy.
You can stop. But you can’t seem to stay in that middle ground where drinking feels intentional.
You swing between effort and overload, pride and frustration. Sometimes the pause feels great until life picks up pace again.
Why coaching helps:
We show you how to build a stable middle, not just switch between extremes. You get tools for stress, overstimulation, and emotional triggers, so alcohol doesn’t remain the go-to default.
4. The “After this, I’ll…” Planner
You’re always on the verge of change.
After this deadline. After the holiday. After the summer. You mean it every time. But life keeps offering reasons to delay.
Why coaching helps:
There is no perfect time. Coaching meets you where you are and helps you adapt in real time. You stop waiting for the right conditions. You start learning how to shift even when things aren’t ideal.
Why coaching?
A lot of people get support in other areas of life – a PT at the gym, a therapist, a mentor, someone to help them think things through.
Alcohol doesn’t get the same treatment. We’re expected to figure it out solo. Make rules. Break them. Start again. Try harder. Hope for the best.
Coaching changes that.
It gives structure to something most of us have been left to navigate on our own. Not because we’ve failed, but because no one ever taught us how to approach alcohol with strategy, not willpower.
Not all coaching is created equal
You’ve probably seen the term “grey area drinker” bandied about. It’s a useful label if you’re a sobriety coach trying to nudge someone toward abstinence, but it never sat right with us. It sounds clinical, like a warning sign.
We coined the term Inbetweener Drinker™ because realistically, that’s where most people sit. Not reckless. Not teetotal. But mindful that they need balance, even if they haven’t yet achieved that consistently.
They’re not interested in being judged by the hard drinkers or recruited by the sober-only crowd. They just want to get on with their lives with no big dramas, no chaos and definitely no personality transplant.
They want a way forward that fits real life. Coaching that respects their intelligence. A strategy that holds up when life gets messy.
